Upcycling: Creativity with used materials

As is known, our daily lives involve the use of various objects and materials. Unfortunately, most of them often end up in the wrong bin. Therefore, in modern societies and the pace we live, proper management of products at the end of their life cycle is necessary. As is normal, the impact of such a process reveals the importance of this act, both for the environment in which we live and work, and for our economy. Indeed, recycling is the most common practice, but it is not the most efficient for the environment. Thus, we conclude that the reduction of consumption (Reduce) and the creative reuse of products (Upcycling – creativity with used materials) come first , practices that are being adopted by more and more companies.

The Salty Bag example

Salty Bag is the ideal case study of a Greek business that contributes to the vision of creating products based on the principles of the Circular Economy with a low environmental impact. Thus, we see its founding in 2013, during a sailing seminar that took place at the Corfu Sailing Club.

What Salty Bag does is reuse materials from products at the end of their life cycle. In this way, it creates handmade bags, backpacks and suitcases. For her, no material is useless. Consequently, all the raw materials used come from used, recycled or recyclable materials. The main sources of raw materials are sails, polyester ropes and vegetable leather. The most common feature of all these raw materials is their low environmental footprint on our Earth.

Each bag is a unique piece . We see this from the marks, scratches, discolorations or even folds that it may have. These are the traces of the unique history of each bag. Characteristics that you can only find in a product created through the process of upcycling.
