World Recycling Day: The importance of recyclable materials

World Recycling Day, now widely known, has the main purpose of highlighting the importance of recyclable materials.

“In the 21st century , recyclable materials have become the seventh resource on Earth.”
This phrase was expressed by Ranjit S. Baxi, president of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), of which METECO is a member.

World Recycling Day began in 2018 (March 18) as an initiative of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).

March 18th is a day dedicated to the future of the planet. It is a day that will show the important role that the recycling industry plays in achieving a sustainable future. In other words, the huge contribution that the recycling industry makes directly helps support climate change goals. Particularly important is that with its contribution, we save over 700 million tons of carbon emissions.

The seventh resource, and the message behind it, is one of the most important messages the global recycling industry can convey. Our primary resources are precious and finite. Therefore, it is our duty to use them wisely. By calling recycled materials “the Earth’s 7th resource,” we give them a fitting title.

Of the resources our planet offers us, 6 are considered the most important: water, oxygen, oil, natural gas, coal, and mineral resources.

Recyclable materials – as a resource now – are just as important, if not more so, than all the basic resources we have on earth.

First, a key step is to see waste as a valuable resource. There is a market for this resource, with the continuous and primary goal of its development and upgrading, so that it achieves the best for the sustainability of the planet.

In this sense, for us the main message and goal of this day is to accept recyclable materials as the 7th resource of the Earth. World Recycling Day is an important day and the importance of recyclable materials is great.
