This year’s Earth Day theme , “Restore Our Earth,” emphasizes natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. In short, it rejects the belief that limiting production alone is the way to address climate change.
Circular Economy instead of limiting consumption
The above can be confirmed if we simply look a little closer at the benefits of recycling.
Recycling reduces the need to grow, harvest or mine new raw materials from the Earth. This in turn reduces the harmful changes that occur in the natural world: fewer forests cut down, fewer river diversions, less water, soil and air pollution.
It is logical that limiting consumption cannot be the best way to deal with a Planet that is constantly presenting increasing needs. This is also shown by the goals that the largest organizations worldwide have presented in their agendas in recent years. Phrases such as circular economy, urban mining, optimization of waste management have entered our lives. As a result, both consumers and industry have begun the journey of adaptation.
Sustainable Development
All of these are parts of the New Economic Model of Sustainable Development . In particular, Greece presents great potential for implementing this productive/economic model thanks to the following:
Available natural resources and unexploited secondary resources and waste.
Scientific potential and know-how as well as productive and technical tradition in technical professions.
Primary sector with growth potential and needs for modernization and reduction of production costs.
Low indicators of resource productivity, as well as energy productivity (and energy efficiency).
Available EU strategic framework and available financial tools.
Knowledge and specialization of young Greek scientists.
Changes in the waste management sector.
New markets are flourishing to better serve the ever-growing needs of the sector. Therefore, Earth Day is simply a reminder that Sustainable Development is the future of Industry.
