The registration of a number of businesses that produce, manage or process waste in the Electronic Waste Registry (EWR) is mandatory. The registration of each business must be completed by February 28, 2017. The Annual Waste Reports must be submitted by May 31, 2017 and will concern the years 2015 and 2016 (JMD 1/1 Government Gazette B’ 1/04.01.2017).
What is the Electronic Waste Registry (EWR)?
The Electronic Waste Registry (EWR) is an electronic service in which, under the responsibility of the obliged enterprises, data on the type and quantity of waste produced, as well as the management method applied, will be registered, with the aim of providing a complete record of the production and movement of waste in our country and of course its control by the competent services and authorities. At the same time, it enables enterprises to submit electronically the Annual Waste Report, which until recently was submitted in physical form.
Why was the HMA established?
The establishment of the HMA aims to:
- keeping a register of all those involved in the production and management of waste, who are subject to licensing
- qualitative and quantitative recording of waste until its final destination (waste traceability)
- ability to cross-check data and facilitate environmental controls
- possibility of more effective inspections to address environmental violations
- improving the ability to produce reports and reports, in particular in order to prepare the relevant reports to the competent EU bodies
- information via the internet for those involved, as well as the public, providing information on waste management options available to registered organizations or
businesses (NEC codes and type of recovery or disposal operations) - ability to access the contact details of the respective organizations or businesses that produce or manage waste, as well as the relevant environmental permits, through the search engine
- interconnection and interoperability with electronic registers of other public authorities
- saving resources, time and administrative burden
- timely and accurate information for all those involved in waste production and management, as well as for citizens.
What does this mean for my business?
This entails a series of obligations regarding the management of the waste generated by your business. More specifically, you must:
- Sign cooperation contracts with licensed recycling companies for all waste generated by your business.
- Carefully record your business’s waste handling.
- Submit the Annual Waste Report electronically every February.
- Ensure the immediate renewal and updating of your environmental permits.
